No. 01  —  About Wren

One chair in 2014. Four chairs now.

Same front door. Tess Calloway still unlocks it at nine.

No. 02  —  How it started

Tess cut hair in her mother’s kitchen all through high school. Neighbors paid in casseroles and the occasional twenty. One of them still books with her every six weeks.

She trained at a busy salon in the city, where nobody had time to ask clients what they wanted. She learned to cut fast. She also learned what kind of place she didn’t want to run.

In 2014 she signed a lease on Fairmont Avenue, painted the walls herself and booked her first client for nine on a Tuesday. She still takes the nine o’clock every Tuesday. The rules started with that first client.

No. 03  —  The rules

Three rules. Twelve years. No exceptions.

They aren’t framed on the wall. Every stylist learned them on their first day.

i.

The consult is free

Fifteen minutes, no cape. If we can’t give you what you want, we say so before you spend a dollar.

ii.

The price comes first

You hear the number before we mix anything. If it changes halfway, you hear that too.

iii.

Your stylist is yours

Nobody hands you to whoever happens to be free. If your stylist is out sick, we call and ask what you’d like to do.

No. 04  —  The stylists

The four people who might hold your scissors.

Same faces, year after year. Nobody rents a chair here and disappears.
