She opened with one chair and a borrowed dryer.

Tess Calloway cut hair in her mother’s kitchen all through high school. Neighbors paid in casseroles.

When she signed the lease on Fairmont Avenue in 2014, the studio had one chair, one sink and a dryer she borrowed from her aunt and never gave back. Twelve years later there are four chairs. The dryer still works. Tess still takes the first appointment every Tuesday.

No. 03  —  How a visit works

No. 04  —  Recent work · Color and cut

Four inches of root. One afternoon.

Her balayage had grown out four inches, the ends were dry from summer, and she’d hidden the root under a claw clip since June. We took four inches off to her collarbone, smudged the root so the regrowth blends, painted fresh pieces through the front and glossed the whole head.

Three and a half hours. She hasn’t worn the clip since.

No. 05  —  In their words

What our regulars say about us.

“

I’ve had eleven people cut my hair since college. Jade is the first one who asked how I part it before she picked up the scissors.

“Rosa cut my curls dry and explained every snip. I cried a little in the car. The good kind.”

“I went gray in one year and hated every inch of it. Mina made it look like a decision.”

No. 06  —  Where we are

Across from the library, two doors down from the bakery.

Running late? Call. We’d rather shorten the blowout than rush your color.
